Conflict Resolution Day began in 2005 to promote peaceful means of resolving conflict, to increase awareness of mediation across the United States, and to foster commitments towards peaceful conflict resolution. The third Thursday of October is recognized as Conflict Resolution Day, which fell on October 17th this year and offers another occasion to reflect on and explore this shared value.
While the present moment can feel tense with divisive rhetoric and violence, peacemaking is neither theoretical nor utopian. Rather than being seen as a passive or external condition, peace might be understood as daily actions that promote healthy relationships. Healthy relationships foster mutual accountability, respect, and collaboration. When conflict does arise, this foundation contributes towards reaching a solution while minimizing or eliminating hurtful words and actions in the process.
The urgency of conflict weighs upon the possible means of resolution, with each side hoping to stem further action towards their own interests. Perhaps it is this very combination of urgency, hope, and fear that can lead to courageous conversation where we step out of viewing only our personal interests and deeply listening to someone else’s hopes and fears, whether in a formal conflict or other disagreements.
Slowing down to process, to listen deeply, can seem difficult yet many everyday conflicts might be peacefully resolved when resolution comes from a place of mutual understanding. A willingness to listen bridges our differences and can create opportunities for people to seek and find deeper human connection, one conversation at a time.
While conflict is natural and inevitable, so remains Northwest Mediation Center’s steadfast commitment to peaceful means of resolving conflicts in our communities across Eastern Washington.
